Bruxism: when you clench your teeth without realising it

Jaw pain upon waking, tooth wear, or frequent headaches may have a common cause: bruxism.
Bruxism is the clenching or grinding of teeth, usually at night. Many people are unaware of it until the consequences appear.
Stress is one of the most closely related factors, although bite and other habits also play a role. Over time, it can cause tooth fractures, sensitivity and even problems with the temporomandibular joint.
The most common solution is a customised bite splint. It is not just a simple protector: it is custom-designed to protect the teeth and relax the muscles.
If you notice jaw tension or have been told that you grind your teeth while sleeping, it is advisable to have it checked as soon as possible. Tooth wear does not recover on its own.
Sleeping should be for resting, not for punishing your smile.
